Great Job Harvesters!
Victory Garden-Harvest Day in the Environmental Learning Center
On Friday, October 14, 2011, the students from last year’s 4th grade Colonial Garden Problem Based Learning Group had a reunion. The students’ from the classes of Mrs. Bremer, Mrs. Robl, & Mrs. Stroczynski harvested crops in the Environmental Learning Center. The students’ helped Mrs. Bresnahan & Mrs. Coyne gather, raspberries, basil, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes, and Dragon carrots (an Asian variety).
The following week, the main chef, Stephanie Antorie created a “Vegetable Root Soup” and a “Lettuce, Tomato, Pesto Salad.” for the students and staff to enjoy at all three lunches. It was delicious!
This was a great culminating activity for those students that sowed last year. We even had some “former 5th graders” visit after school with their parents to check out the Victory Garden, which honors veterans! They too were excited to see that –“We truly reap what we sow!”
The Village School Environmental is looking forward to planting again in the spring. In the mean time, we will be winterizing the pond and gardens. The students will also be researching, solving the problems we encountered during last years growing period. Students will also be making important decisions regarding the planting of next spring’s crops.
We look forward to getting other members in the community to become involved in the Environmental Learning Center too! “It takes a Village to raise a child!”
