Grammar Vocabulary 1

  • Sentence: A sentence expresses a complete thought.

Subjects: Subjects are nouns pronouns, or phrases used as nouns.

Predicate: Predicate tells about the subject.

Clause: A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a predicate

Main Clause: A main clause can stand alone as a sentence.

Subordinate Clause: A subordinate clause is used with the main clause to express a related idea.

Phrase: A phrase is a group of words that has no subject or predicate.

Declarative sentence: A declarative sentence makes a statement.

Interrogative sentence: An interrogative sentence asks a question.

  • Imperative sentence: An imperative sentence makes a request or gives a command.

Exclamatory sentence: An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feelings or emotions.

    Capitalization

     When writing someone’s exact words, capitalize the first word in the quotation.

     Ex.: Mrs. Chai said, “Please do your best.”

     Capitalize the days of the week and the months of the year.

    Ex.: During December, we have a winter break.

    Capitalize the names of the holidays.

    Ex.: We celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of November.

     
    Proper nouns begin with capital letters.

     Ex.: Clara and Panitha are kind.

     Ex: Guy and Yulie are good friends.

     
    Capitalize the first and any other important words in the titles of books, songs, and poems.

    Ex.: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is my favorite book.

     
    Abbreviations

     An abbreviation is a short way of writing a word or group of words.
    Ex.: E S L: English as a Second Language

     A period is used to end a sentence that is a statement, command, or a request.
    Ex. Camila and Kevin are kind. (statement)
          
    Do your homework. (command
        
      Please remember to clean up. (request)

     
    Use a period after an initial. ( An initial is the first letter of a name.)
    Ex. J. Chai (teacher)
    B. Obama (president)

    Use a period as a decimal point and to separate dollars and cents.
    Ex. Haruru paid $3. 40 for two ice cream cones for Marika and herself.

     
    Place a period after each part of an abbreviation-unless the abbreviation is an acronym. ( An acronym is a word that is formed from the first letters of words in a phrase.)

    Acronyms                UNICEF   NATO     laser     modem

     When an abbreviation is the last word in a sentence, use one period at the end of the sentence.
    Ex. Supercomputers will be able to predict rain, snow, earthquakes, etc.
